Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

On Sunday evening at home at Regency Furniture Stadium, the Blue Crabs fell just one run short of their season high, pounding out a 13-5 win over the Bridgeport Bluefish, avoiding a three-game sweep. The Blue Crabs, who lead the Atlantic League in home runs with 141 in just 117 games, smoked three on Sunday in the slugfest to improve to a league best 72-45 on the season. Southern Maryland also owns the best second half record in the league at 30-17.

The game was still scoreless going into the bottom of the second, when the Crabs did most of their damage. They sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning, collecting their first seven hits of the ballgame to plate eight runs. Dustin Spruill ripped a bases-loaded two-run single, his first professional RBI, to begin the avalanche. Two batters later Chuck Jeroloman mashed a two-run double, making the score 4-0 Southern Maryland. The inning was punctuated by back-to-back home runs, as James Shanks blasted his 16th of the season, a three run shot to left, which was followed by Patrick Osborn's 13th of the '09 campaign.

Leading 8-0 into the fourth, Bridgeport struck back with an RBI single from Brandon Sing and an RBI groundout from Luis Rodriguez. The Bluefish tacked on three more in the fifth, on a two-run double from Tyrone Pendergrass and an RBI double from Jesse Hoorelbeke. With five unanswered runs, Bridgeport trimmed the Blue Crabs' lead to three, but would not score again.

The Crabs wrapped things up with three runs in the sixth after an RBI double from Shanks, a run-scoring single from Osborn, and a second RBI double from Michael Tucker. When Jeroloman laced a line drive two-run homer over the left field wall in the seventh, the night was essentially complete. The dinger was Jeroloman's eighth of the season.

After the eight-run second, Bridgeport starter Kyle Jackson (10-10) was chased from the ballgame. In two innings pitched, the righty took the loss allowing seven hits, seven earned runs, with a strikeout and no walks. Knuckleballing right-hander Joe Gannon (9-13) picked up the win for Southern Maryland, going 6.2 innings with 11 hits, five runs four of which were earned, with four strikeouts and a lone walk.

With the win, the Blue Crabs wrapped up the 2009 regular season with Bridgeport, taking the season series 12-8. After going 15-5 against the Bluefish in the inaugural 2008 season, the Crabs lead the all-time series by a 27-13 count.

The Blue Crabs will next be in action Monday evening, for the first of a four-game road series against the Camden Riversharks at Campbell's Field in Camden, New Jersey. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
