Newark Bears News Release

The Newark Bears fell to the Long Island Ducks 15-6 on Sunday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium in downtown Newark, NJ. Prior to the first pitch Roberto Clemente Jr., Mayor Cory Booker and the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network joined The Newark Bears to retire baseball legend and humanitarian Roberto Clemente's #21 jersey in center field.

The Ducks were off to a strong start after a designated hitter Jose Herrera launched a two run homer and Matt Cavagnaro followed with a three run inside the park homerun in the first frame.

Newark collected a combined six runs in the fourth and fifth innings including a two run double off the bat of Carl Loadenthal in the fourth and a two run bomb from Salomon Manriquez, his seventh homerun of the season, in the fifth. Manriquez went 2-4 and crossed home plate twice.

Long Island put four runs on the board in the fifth, three from a Johnny Hernandez homer, and the fourth an RBI single off the bat of Estee Harris.

Ducks second baseman Juan Francia hit a two run homer in the seventh inning to collect insurance runs, and Long Island closed the game in the ninth after Johnny Hernandez scored on an RBI single.

Former New York Yankee Ramiro Mendoza took the loss after tossing for four and one-third innings, striking out two Ducks and giving up eight earned runs. He was followed by lefty Cory Willey, Luke Demko and Scott Rice, who pitched in the eighth and ninth innings striking out three and allowing one run. Long Island's BJ LaMura notched the win, pitching for five innings striking out five and giving up all of Newark's six runs.

The Bears won the three game series after taking both games in yesterday's double header, bringing their second half of the season record to 25-23 and Long Island's to 24-25.

The Bears say farewell to the Long Island Ducks and welcome the York Revolution to Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium for a four game series starting tomorrow at 7:05pm.
