Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

The contract of Southern Maryland Blue Crabs Pitcher Dan Reichert has been purchased by the Cleveland Indians, it was announced on Thursday. Reichert, who went 3-1 with a 3.40 ERA in six starts for the Blue Crabs, has been assigned to Triple-A Buffalo and is expected to start for the Bisons on Sunday. Reichert is the first player in franchise history to sign with an affiliated club.

The 31-year-old from Turlock, CA was originally selected by the Kansas City Royals in the first round (7th overall) of the 1997 draft. He has appeared in 124 big league games over five seasons with the Royals and Toronto Blue Jays, going 21-25 with a pair of saves. His last stint in the Majors was with the Blue Jays in 2003.

Reichert has worked into at least the sixth inning in all six of his starts and nearly notched a complete game shutout in his last start at Regency Furniture Stadium on May 20, allowing his only run in the ninth inning on his way to the victory. He has struck out 38 and walked only eight in 39.1 innings of work.

"Dan is certainly a quality pitcher, who will be missed," said Blue Crabs Manager Butch Hobson. "They're (Cleveland) going to throw him into the Triple-A level and if Dan continues to do what he did here, he could make it back to the big leagues this season."

Since his last Major League experience in 2003, the 6'3, 170 pounder spent time at the Triple-A level for two seasons and has pitched in the Atlantic League, Northern League and Can-Am League under Hobson with Nashua in 2006.

The Blue Crabs are currently in the midst of a seven-game homestand at Regency Furniture Stadium that lasts thru Sunday. Tickets are available for all games by calling 301-638-9788, or online at www.SOMDbluecrabs.com.
