Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
Waldorf, MD - After a three day stint as the Monuments the Blue Crabs are back. The return to the Blue Crabs came in a series opener on the road against the Long Island Ducks. Southern Maryland fought tooth and nail with the Ducks, but came up just short of a victory, losing by a final score of 5-3.
Tony Thomas started the game off with a bang. Thomas, the leadoff man, blasted his seventh home run of the season on a full count in the top of the first inning to put the Blue Crabs ahead early against the Long Island starting pitcher, Travis Banwart.
Southern Maryland sent a right-hander, Kyle Simon to the mound and he pitched a gem. Each of the first two runs that he allowed came via the long ball, with one coming in the second inning, and the latter in the fourth, giving Long Island a 2-1 advantage.
The Ducks' Daniel Fields tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, the final inning of work for Simon who would issue a quality start while allowing just five hits. Fields singled on a line drive to right field, giving Long Island a 3-1 lead.
The good guys evened the scoring in the very next frame when 2019 Atlantic League All-Star Cory Vaughn mashed his 12th homer of the season, scoring Dean Green in the process.
The Ducks matched the Blue Crabs' pair of runs in their half of the seventh on the Blue Crab reliever Kevin Munson (L, 1-2), and their 5-3 lead would hold throughout the duration of the contest with their reliever Michael Tonkin (W, 2-0) on the mound. Southern Maryland will send the southpaw, Tommy Thorpe, to the hill tomorrow to try and even the series up.
The Blue Crabs will return home July 12th, for the series opener of a three-game set against the Lancaster Barnstormers with a 6:35 p.m. first pitch.
