New Britain Bees News Release
(Waldorf, MD) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (16-32) defeated the New Britain Bees (24-22) 9-6 at Regency Furniture Stadium on Thursday night in the finale of a five-game series. The contest included a two-hour, one minute rain delay prior to the scheduled 6:35 P.M. first pitch.
New Britain starting pitcher Cory Riordan registered a no-decision in the matchup after allowing five runs on seven hits (one home run) in four innings on the mound, striking out one. Southern Maryland starting pitcher Tommy Thorpe also did not factor in the game's final outcome, surrendering two runs on three hits in four innings pitched, walking and striking out two.
New Britain jumped out in front 2-0 versus Thorpe in the top half of the first inning when Jason Rogers drove home Alexi Amarista and Taylor Motter by way of a two-run double after Amarista gave the keynote in the ballgame with a two-base hit of his own and Motter walked with one man down. Trailing 5-2 in the top of the fifth, the Bees tied the affair up at five with a crooked number off Blue Crabs reliever and winning pitcher Ryan Chaffee (2-4), highlighted by a pair of home runs, the first a solo shot to left centerfield from Tyler Clark (his second four-bagger of the season) to lead off the frame, and a game-tying two-run blast produced by Amarista, his eighth big fly of the campaign, matching him with Jonathan Galvez for the team lead. In the home half of the sixth, losing pitcher Sammy Gervacio (2-3) issued a leadoff walk to Cory Vaughn, who would later hustle down the line from third base with the go-ahead run on a wild pitch thrown by Michael Johnson with two away. Down 7-5 in the top of the eighth, the boys from the Hardware City scratched a run across to cut the deficit in half when Bijan Rademacher scored all the way from second base on a wild pitch tossed by James Dykstra. A pair of Blue Crabs insurance runs in the middle of the eighth gave the game its final score of 9-6, and in the top of the ninth Mat Latos needed just four pitches to retire the side in order and collect his team best sixth save in 2019. Rademacher led the way offensively with a three-hit performance.
The Bees return to New Britain Stadium on Tuesday, June 18th when they welcome in the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs to begin a three-game midweek series and six-game homestand. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M. It will be another Two-fer Tuesday in the Hardware City, as fans will have the opportunity to buy one ticket, and get one FREE when purchasing online, over the phone, or at the Bees Ticket Office!
