New Britain Bees News Release

(Sugar Land, TX) - The New Britain Bees (25-22) defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters (28-21) 4-1 at Constellation Field on Friday evening in the opener of a four-game wraparound series in the Lone Star State.

New Britain starting pitcher Jed Bradley (3-0) earned the win after allowing just one run on four hits (one home run) in five and one-third innings pitched, walking one and striking out six. Sugar Land starting pitcher Roy Merritt (2-3) was tagged with the loss, surrendering four runs on six hits (one home run) in six and two-thirds innings on the mound, walking two and striking out three. Jim Fuller shut the door in the bottom half of the ninth inning for his team-leading fifth save overall.

New Britain took a 1-0 lead versus Merritt in the top of the second frame when Jonathan Galvez plated Jason Rogers by way of a sacrifice fly after Rogers opened up the inning with a base knock to left field and later stole third base (his first bag swiped in 2019) with one away. Sugar Land tied the game at one in the home half of the third as Albert Cordero cracked leadoff a solo home run to left off Bradley for his third big fly of the campaign. The Bees answered right by the next half inning and Galvez was the focal point once again as he blasted a go-ahead three-run tater to left for his team-best ninth roundtripper of the campaign. The two-time Liberty Division All-Star slugger tallied his eighth multi-RBI game in 2019, and first of the four rib-eye steak variety. The four runs driven home by Galvez also matches a single-game season high for the boys from the Hardware City, the fourth time such a feat has been accomplished already in 2019. Having left the ballgame with the lead, the southpaw Bradley handed things off to his teammates in the New Britain bullpen, and they were spectacular as the trio of Devin Burke, Jose Rosario, and Fuller fired three and two-thirds innings of scoreless baseball on just three hits allowed along with four strikeouts. Darren Ford led the way for the visitors with a pair of base knocks.

The Bees return to New Britain Stadium on Tuesday, June 18th when they welcome in the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs to begin a three-game midweek series and six-game homestand. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M. It will be another Two-fer Tuesday in the Hardware City, as fans will have the opportunity to buy one ticket, and get one FREE when purchasing online, over the phone, or at the Bees Ticket Office!
