Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
The Blue Crabs defeated the Long Island Ducks 5-1 Friday evening at Regency Furniture Stadium and have now won six games in a row, one shy of their season high. RHP Kenny Rayborn earned his eighth win of the season as he allowed only one run through 6.1 innings. The Crabs gave Rayborn an early lead and never relinquished it, scoring in both the second and third. Catcher Christian Lopez put the Blue Crabs on the board with an RBI ground rule double, driving in leftfielder Shaun Cumberland. An inning later second baseman Casey Benjamin reached base on an error and designated hitter Matt Craig followed with a single to put two men on with nobody out. Then with one away, first baseman Eric Crozier grounded into an RBI fielder's choice that scored Benjamin. The Ducks cut their deficit in half in the fourth, however, as rightfielder John Rodriguez hit his sixth homer of the year, a solo shot. Despite allowing the home run, Rayborn went on to retire the next eight batters and pitched into the sixth before being taken out for RHP Steve Palazzolo. Lopez tacked on another run for the Crabs in the sixth with a solo homer to left-centerfield, his fourth of the season. Ducks RHP Kip Wells (1-1) was pulled after six innings, and suffered his first loss. An inning later, Crozier blasted a two RBI home run into leftfield. It was his 12th of the year, tying him for second in the league behind Jason Perry of Lancaster. The Crabs bullpen finished Rayborn's one run gem with 2.2 innings of scoreless work. Southern Maryland's 52-33 overall record is the best in the Atlantic League, and their 19 games over .500 is also a season high. The Blue Crabs return to action Saturday evening in the third of a this four-game series against the Long Island Ducks at Regency Furniture Stadium continuing this franchise record 11-game homestand. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
