Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - The Canadian Football League (CFL) announced today the team winners for the 2014 CFL Player Awards . Players were selected by voting members of the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC) and the CFL head coaches.
Rookie kicker Lirim Hajrullahu dominated the clubs ballots, taking home Most Outstanding Rookie (unanimous), Most Outstanding Canadian and Most Outstanding Special Teams (unanimous) awards. The Western product signed with Winnipeg as a free agent in January, earned the placekicking position out of training camp, and by week four was also the club's punter. Hajrullahu tied a CFL record for rookie placekickers, hitting on 87% of his field goals (40 of 46). His longest made field goal was from 51 yards out. He was named the CFL's Special Team's Player of the Week in week five.
First year starting quarterback, Drew Willy, was named the club's Most Outstanding Player. Willy started 17 of 18 games, missing one due to injury, and currently sits second in the CFL in passing yardage with 3,769. Willy threw 14 touchdown passes, while being the club's leader both on and off the field. He had six - 300 yard passing games, and was named the Offensive Player of the Week twice (Week's 1 and 6). Willy led the Bombers to multiple come from behind wins, including two game winning drives in the first six weeks.
For the third season in a row, two-time Division All-Star Glenn January takes home the team award for Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman. January, in his eighth season in the CFL and sixth with the Blue Bombers, suited up for 17 games at left tackle - missing one due to injury.
Another CFL rookie took home a Bombers team award. Defensive back Maurice Leggett earned the club's Most Outstanding Defensive Player. Leggett joined the Bombers this past offseason, and made an immediate impact in the secondary. Leggett currently sits second in the league with five interceptions, including three in one game (Aug 22). He also recorded three fumble recoveries, 65 defensive tackles, and two sacks.
