Blue Anchors Fall to Huskies 8-7

Duluth, Minn. - The Alexandria Blue Anchors fell to the Duluth Huskies 8-7 Friday night at Wade Stadium. Following the loss, Alexandria is 10-16 in the second half and 20-40 overall.

The Anchors built an early lead with a big inning in the second against Dan Schmidt. Albert Baur led off the inning with a walk and Ryan Blanchard and Tim Cusick singled to load the bases with no outs. After Michael Barash struck out, Andrew Mulato singled home Baur for an early 1-0 lead. A sacrifice fly from Tyler Curtis plated Blanchard and Alexandria led 2-0. Keegan Dale then singled to center brining in another before Kris Goodman hit a double scoring Dale and Mulato. With Goodman on second, Georgie Salem blooped a single into left bringing in one more and the Blue Anchors had a commanding 6-0 lead.

Alexandria built upon its lead in the fourth against reliever Josh Bornstein. Curtis hit a one-out base hit and moved to second on a two-out walk by Goodman. Salem delivered another RBI single to score Curtis and push the Anchors' lead to 7-0.

Duluth started its comeback against Eldon Evans in the bottom of the fourth. Trey Vavra doubled with one out and went to third on a single by Michael Suiter. Keith Curcio grounded out to second but it brought home Vavra to cut the Anchors' lead to 7-1.

The lead shrunk again in the sixth. Kyle Teaf singled to start the frame and moved to second on a Vavra one-out single. Suiter also singled to bring home Teaf and Vavra came around to score on a Curcio single. With two on, Brad Wilson singled to right bringing in two runs and Alexandria led just 7-5.

The Huskies were able to knot the score against Brandon Johnson in the seventh. Christoph Bono double to start the inning before Vavra walked with two outs. Then a single by Suiter scored Bono and Curcio brought in Vavra to tie the score at seven.

Taylor Simpson came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth. He walked Teaf to start the inning and Vavra was hit by a pitch. Once again, Suiter singled home another run, this being the winner, and Teaf scored the winning run giving Duluth an 8-7 lead.

Evans received a no-decision as he threw six innings allowing five runs on nine hits with a strikeout. Johnson worked one inning and gave up two runs on three hits, a walk and a strikeout. Tyler Beck, who pitched the eighth, pitched a perfect inning with one punch out. Simpson (2-4) took the loss going .1 innings giving up a run on a hit and a walk.

Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Georgie Salem (CF) - In five at bats, the Alabama outfielder had three hits and two RBI.

Notes: Evans worked a season-high six innings...This is the first game in which Johnson has allowed multiple runs...Beck now leads the team in strikeouts with 38...Cusick had his first multi-hit game since July 21...Goodman is closing in on Andrew Sohn in runs scored as Goodman as 39 on the year and Sohn has 40...The Blue Anchors look to even the series Saturday with the Huskies...Spencer Koopmans (1-1, 5.97) will take the hill...The game, starting at 6:35 p.m. can be seen live at www.youtube.com/user/NorthwoodsLeague.
