Despite a 2-4, two-RBI performance from Jake Bergren (Minnesota), including the first home run in Blue Anchor team history, the Alexandria Blue Anchors dropped the 2013 Northwoods Season Opener to the Duluth Huskies by a 9-4 final on a rainy and wet Wednesday night in front of a crowd of 400.

Embarking on their inaugural campaign, the Blue Anchors plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on four Conor Lourey walks, but Duluth responded with a single run in the top of the second, a pair in the third, and one in the fifth before Alexandria leveled the contest at four in the bottom of the fifth on Bergren's 2-run shot.

"It felt good to get a pitch," Bergren said. "And it was good to go over the wall."

"That was a pretty good swing on a hitter's count," Anchor's Skipper Al Newman said. "And with the short porch in right field, our hitters will take advantage of it throughout the year."

However, the Huskies would score the final five runs of the evening over the sixth, seventh, and eighth to win the ballgame.

Blue Anchors starter Corey Fitzgerald (St. Cloud St.) started hot, facing the minimum in the first, before the Anchors were able to score a run on an Andrew Sohn (Western Michigan) single, as well as a bases loaded walk to Andrew Mulato (Michigan St.).

The Huskies, however, picked up five runs on five hits and a pair of walks against Scott Sanderson (St. Cloud St., 0-1). Tyler Beck (Augsburg) came in and recorded the final six out for the Blue Anchors.

Thomas Rogers (1-0) recorded the win for Duluth, pitching 4.1 innings and giving up the two-run Bergren homer.

"We had a chance to blow the game open early," Newman said. "There was still some rust that needed to be knocked off. Overall, the guys are trying to get back into game shape."

Game two of this three-game set will take place at Knute Nelson Memorial Park at 8:05pm on Thursday evening.
