COLUMBIA, S.C.- On a warm beautiful evening the (9-4) second half Columbia Blowfish held host to the (4-13) second half Florence Red Wolves, on Rick Henry Appreciation Night!
Columbia posted the first run of the ball game early in the bottom of the first with a leadoff single to right field from Blowfish shortstop, Michael Wilson (Francis Marion). Wilson advanced to second on a wild pitch, Allen Staton (North Greenville) singled to right advancing Wilson to third. Wilson scored on the next pitch as it was thrown away in the dirt again.
Columbia would score another run in the third as Wilson had a leadoff walk to start the inning, stole second. Allen Staton singled up the middle scoring Wilson easily.
The Blowfish tallied yet another run in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff walk from designated hitter, D.C. Arendas (South Carolina). Arendas stole second before Columbia first baseman, Ryan Bull (Notre Dame), also walked.
The next batter to come up to the plate was blowfish second baseman, Brandon Mitchell (North Carolina A&T), who as both runners were stealing on the play, grounded to third. The third baseman stepped on third for the force out and threw over to first, but the ball sailed into the first base side stands and advanced Bull to score on the play.
Blowfish pitching held the Red Wolves to just two hits all night and no runs as Columbia starter, David Duncan (Florida A&M) threw five innings, giving up no runs off of two hits, three walks, and five strikeouts. Blowfish reliever Stuart Pound (USC Beaufort) came in for two innings of solid work giving up no runs, no hits, one walk, and two strikeouts. Derrick Smith (College of Charleston) would come on for the final two frames giving up no runs off no hits, one walk, and four strikeouts. Duncan picked up the win moving him to (3-3) on the season. Smith picked up his seventh save.
Starter for the Red Wolves Friday night was right-hander Wales Tony (Clemson), tossing five innings, giving up three runs, one earned, off of five hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Florence reliever Andrew Cox (Francis Marion) came in in the sixth toeing the rubber for two innings giving up no runs, not hits, three walks, and two strikeouts. Tyson Ashcraft (Lipscomb) came on for the final inning of work, giving up no runs, no hits, no walks, and one strikeout. Tony picked up his second loss of the season moving him to (0-2).
The Blowfish are now (10-4) in the second half of the season sitting in first place of the Western Standings of the Coastal Plain League.
The Columbia Blowfish will be back in action at home next Tuesday night July 30th with a double header hosting the High Point Thomasville HiToms, with first pitch set for 6:05pm. Gates open at 5:00pm.
