August 4, 2012 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Lexington County Blowfish News Release

WILMINGTON, N.C.- The Columbia Blowfish topped the Wilmington Sharks Saturday night 7-5 to open the first round of the 2012 Petitt Cup Playoffs. The win gives the Blowfish a 1-0 lead in the best of three series. Game two will be Sunday at Historic Capital City Stadium at 6:05.

In game one the Blowfish got another solid start from a starting pitcher. This time left-hander Derek Beasley got the ball for the Blowfish. Beasley went six innings giving up just one run on five hits while striking out two. The Sharks got the lone run off of Beasley in the second inning.

The Blowfish answered with two runs in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. Graham Saiko scored on a Tre-Von Johnson sacrifice fly to right to tie the game. Luke Dunlap then hit an RBI single to right to score Gabe Loweree to give the Blowfish a 2-1 lead.

The 2-1 score would stand until the seventh when the Blowfish exploded for four runs to take a 6-1 lead. Joshua Miller hit a three RBI double to left center. Jarrod Reed, Michael Wilson, and Federico Castagnini scored on the play. Miller would later score on a Johnson single to left.

The Sharks would not go away though as they answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh against Blowfish reliever Connor Sullivan. Sullivan went two thirds of an inning giving up three runs on four hits.

The Blowfish added a run in the eighth to take a 7-4 lead. Castagnini scored on a wild pitch after walking, stealing second and advancing to the third on a ground ball. Jeff Kinley got the final out in the seventh and then pitched the eighth for the Blowfish. Kinley faced just four batters while striking out two of them.

The Sharks would threaten in the ninth cutting the Blowfish lead to two at 7-5 and would load the bases but Joshua Knab closed the door on the Sharks to secure the win for the Blowfish. Knab threw just the one inning giving up the one run on three hits while striking out two.

The Blowfish will return to Capital City Stadium tomorrow for game two of the series. Tickets are available at blowfishbaseball.com or by calling 254-FISH. First pitch is set for 6:05 and gates will open at 5:00.
