Owls Fall in Extras in Game One

August 4, 2012 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Forest City Owls News Release

Asheboro, NC- A critical mistake at the wrong time handed the Asheboro Copperheads a stunning 6-5 win in 14 innings, in Game 1 of the best-of-three first round series against the Forest City Owls. Luke Tendler doubled off Jake Padgett with one out in the bottom of the 14th. Tendler then advanced to third on a groundout by Bowen Woodson. On the first pitch to pinch-hitter Zac Carter, Padgett's fastball went off the top of catcher Will Chandler's glove allowing Tendler to score the winning run.

It's the fourth time in nine meetings this year that a game between the Owls and Copperheads has gone to extra innings. Pete Schultz picked up the win after seven outstanding innings of relief. The righty struck out nine Owls, despite giving up the tying runs late.

Tendler did his best to ensure the Copperheads would be positioned for the upset. The outfielder took Owls' starter Nick Lomascolo deep twice, the second time Tendler has homered twice in a game against Forest City this season. All six of his home runs have come against Owls pitching. His first homer, a solo shot in the 4th, gave Asheboro a 3-2 lead. His next one, a two-run bomb in the 6th, snapped a 3-3 tie to put the Copperheads on top 5-3.

The Owls rallied late though as Luke Tollison ripped an RBI double in the 8th inning to bring Forest City back within one at 5-4. In the 9th, Bryan Aanderud singled with one out. Nate Chong doubled and then Alex Close was intentionally walked to load the bases. Schultz allowed the tying run to score on a wild pitch, but would get out of the inning without giving up the go-ahead run.

Forest City struck first when Chandler drove a ball over the scoreboard in right field to make it 1-0 Owls in the 2nd inning. The team doubled the lead to 2-0 in the 3rd on three straight two-out singles, with Close driving in the run. Hunter Ridge brought it back even with a two-run single in the bottom half of the 3rd, following Caleb Cole's double to put both runners in scoring position.

The Copperheads will try to close out Forest City tomorrow at McNair Field. The game will start at 7:05 PM. Call 828-245-0000 to order tickets or stop by the ticket booth at McNair Field.
