Lexington County Blowfish News Release
Asheboro, N.C. (June 5, 2015) - The Asheboro Copperheads continued to click on all cylinders offensively in a 5-3 victory over the Lexington County Blowfish on Friday night.
The Blowfish could not seem to get any rhythm going offensively, due to striking out ten times in this game. Strikeouts ended significant scoring threats in the second, fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
The Copperheads, who lead the league in most offensive categories, made life difficult early for the visitors. Matt Phillips (Georgia Tech) pitched a strong two innings, but ran into trouble in the third.
Quincy Quintero (3-for-4) and Ryan Mincher (2-for-3), ripped back to back hits. Phillips would then walk the next three batters before being replaced by Jae Skoda (University of New Orleans). Skoda struck out Kyle Hamner and Justin Bellinger, and also forced Damian Rutherford into a flyout to end the threat.
The bottom third of the lineup for Asheboro scored all five runs. Quintero and Mincher both scored two runs apiece, and Ryan Columbo added one more on a double steal in the eighth inning. Colombo broke for home plate as Jordan Winawer got a great jump at first base to try and steal second base.
Madison Stokes (University of South Carolina) set the table for two Blowfish runs on this night. He went 3-for-4 on the night, scoring two runs on two RBI hits by Sly Edwards (Charleston Southern).
J.D. Crowe (Francis Marion) blasted a solo shot over the right field wall, his second home run of the season, with two outs in the fifth inning. His 7th RBI of the season, which leads the team, trimmed the Copperheads lead to 4-2.
Stokes started the top of the ninth inning off well for the Blowfish with a leadoff single. He advanced to second on a groundout, and then to third on a wild pitch. However, he would be stranded, and the Blowfish would have to look to get back on the right track at home.
The Blowfish and the Copperheads will return to Lexington, S.C. on Saturday. Tickets are available by visiting the Blowfish website at blowfishbaseball.com, calling the box office at 803-254-FISH, and at Blowfish On Main at 101 East Main Street in Lexington.
