Blowfish Grab Lead Early, Can't Hold Off Steamers
June 4, 2014 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Lexington County Blowfish News Release
EDENTON, NC - The Columbia Blowfish took the field on Wednesday night as winners of two out of their last three games. After knocking off Fayetteville and Martinsville, the Blowfish lost a tough game against Petersburg 5-4.
Looking to turn things around in the final game of their three game road swing to Virginia and North Carolina.
Sending Michael Carpin (Georgia) to the hill, the Blowfish looked to continue the good run of baseball that they have been playing.
Through 4 innings Carpin was dealing, allowing just 2 hits and 2 walks. In the 5th however, the Steamers got to him for 4 hits and 6 earned runs as Edenton stormed back to tie the ballgame.
The Blowfish continued to put runs on the board, however, as Columbia scored at least one run in the each of the first 6 innings as they owned a 7-6 advantage in the 7th inning.
A couple more Steamer runs in the bottom of the 7th inning allowed them to snare the lead back at a count of 8-7.
In the top of the 8th inning, Columbia got two men aboard with one out in the inning, but could not capitalize.
The Steamers went on to shut things down in the top of the 9th inning, and handed the Blowfish their second straight loss on the year in a final count of 13-7.
Michael Bell (Georgia) went 4 for 6 in the game with two doubles, two runs batted in, and two runs scored. Derek Fritz (Florida State) went 1 for 4 with two runs batted in, and Allen Staton continued his hot streak by going 1 for 3 with a run knocked home and a run scored.
After a two game winning streak the Blowfish have lost two in a row and fall to 3-5 overall on the season. The Blowfish return home Thursday night, June 5th, to face off against the Gastonia Grizzlies looking to get some momentum rolling. It's USO night at Historic Capital City Stadium on Thursday night, as the Blowfish celebrate the USO of South Carolina. USO is a non-profit organization that provides programs, services, and live entertainment to United States military troops and their families. Gates open a 6:00pm, with first pitch set for 7:05pm.
