June 4, 2014 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs have made a habit of late-inning comebacks this year, and Wednesday night was no exception as the edged the Morehead City Marlins 6-3.
For the SwampDogs, now 4-3, the win marked their first against Coastal Plain League competition since a win Friday at Columbia.
The scoring got started in the bottom of the third inning when shortstop Kam Stewart had an infield single and advanced to third when left fielder Alex Harris singled into right center field off Morehead City starter Chris Good.
Stewart came around to score when right fielder Norm Donkin grounded out to second base, and Harris scored when first baseman Chase Edwards lined a single to left.
Starting pitcher Bennett Schiltz surrendered a solo home run to second baseman Nick Lombardi in the fourth, and allowed first baseman Quincy Nieporte to score after he doubled, and the score was knotted up at 2-2.
The Marlins would break the tie with a run in the sixth inning, and the SwampDogs were in need of a comeback.
And that's what they would get.
With Good's day done after six, Logan Hershenow came on to pitch the seventh inning, and after retiring the leadoff batter, he allowed an infield single to centerfielder David LaFleur and a single to Kam Stewart. After LaFleur went first-to-third on the hit, and Stewart stole second, the infield was drawn in for Alex Harris.
Harris chopped one to short and Kirk Morgan mishandled it, bringing LaFleur home with the tying run.
A perfectly placed bunt single by Donkin would plate Stewart, Harris would score on a base hit from designated hitter Lane Paul, and Edwards would ground into a fielder's choice, scoring Donkin with the sixth and final run of the game for the Dogs.
Ryan Domingue would pitch the final two innings for the SwampDogs, putting the finishing touches on the victory.
Schiltz got the win and improves to 1-0, while Hershenow took the loss. He is 0-1. Domingue's save was his first of the season.
The SwampDogs hit the road to take on the Wilmington Sharks tomorrow night at The Shark Tank, and return home Fridy to host the Wilson Tobs. For tickets and more information, call 910-426-5900.
