WILMINGTON, N.C. - The SwampDogs lost a heartbreaker to the Wilmington Sharks 5-4 Tuesday night.

Despite the loss, the SwampDogs had their best offensive day of this season, pounding out a season-high 13 hits.

Things got started in the third inning for the SwampDogs, when second baseman Jason Blum led off with a beautifully placed bunt hit down the third base line off Sharks starting pitcher John Olczak. Blum then stole second and went to third when left fielder Alex Harris singled.

After right fielder Norm Donkin struck out for the second out of the inning, designated hitter Lane Paul dumped a single into right field plating Blum and Harris with the first two runs of the game.

A Blum sacrifice fly in the sixth would plate catcher Jacob Whiting, while a wild pitch would bring home Norm Donkin in the seventh after he tripled.

Blum would finish the game 4-4 with a run scored and an RBI. He also added three stolen bases.

On the defensive side of the ball, starting pitcher Rayne Raven was in the zone. He set down the first 11 batters to face him, and didn't allow a single hit until the seventh inning. This marked the second consecutive start that Raven took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning, tossing 5.2 innings of no-hit ball against Morehead City on May 28th.

Raven would strike out 10 batters in his seven innings of work, allowing just one run on two hits.

Ben Dartnell would come in to pitch the eighth inning, and worked 0.1 innings, allowing 2 hits and 3 runs before being pulled in favor of Deshorn Lake, who came in with the tying run on second base.

Lake allowed a hit to right fielder Nathan Becker to score the tying run, a hit to second baseman Sam Foy, then uncorked a wild pitch to move the runners up to second and third with one out. He then struck out third baseman Hunter Smith, before unleashing another wild pitch which brought in Becker with the go-ahead run.

Kyler Stout came on to try and get the save for the Sharks, and worked around a hit batsman to shut the door.

The losing pitcher for the SwampDogs was Lake, who falls to 0-1, Kevin Husum got the win for the Sharks.

The Dogs are back at it Wednesday night at J.P. Riddle Stadium to host the Morehead City Marlins at 7:05 pm. For tickets and more information call 910-426-5900.
