Blowfish Fall in Wacky Game 14-8
June 28, 2014 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Lexington County Blowfish News Release
COLUMBIA, SC- The Columbia Blowfish took the field at home against the Martinsville Mustangs on Saturday looking to put together a little win streak as the close of the first half of the Coastal Plain League season draws near.
Billed as a good pitching matchup, the story of the ballgame ended up being the two offenses. The Mustangs and Blowfish combined on 22 runs and 30 hits over the course of the game, including a 5th inning that saw each team score 4 runs.
The Blowfish put up runs in the 1st, 5th, 6th, and 7th, yet it proved to not be enough as Columbia fell to 9-18 overall on the season.
Chase Shelton (Charleston Southern) was 3 for 4 on the night with 2 runs scored and 2 driven in, while battery mate Allen Staton (North Greenville) was 3 for 5 with 3 runs scored on the evening.
Central Florida's Erik Barber was 2 for 4 with 2 driven in and one run scored, and his outfield counterpart Julian Santos (Bethune-Cookman) went 2 for 4 with a run scored and a run driven in as well on the season.
"We're trying to keep everybody fresh, keep guys sharp as we look toward the second half of the season," said Blowfish head coach Jonathan Johnson. "We start fresh Monday against Florence, and that's when we have to make our point that we're gonna make a run and make a statement here in the second half of the season."
The Blowfish close the first half of the CPL summer season with a game on the road against the Florence RedWolves before getting a clean slate to start the second half of the season as the Gastonia Grizzlies come to Historic Capital City Stadium on July 1st. The Blowfish will have Independence Day Fireworks on July 3rd, 4th, and 5th at the Cap, with their July 3rd contest being an exhibition with the USC Gamecock Alumni team.
