
Blowfish Defeat Gastonia 6-4

GASTONIA, N.C.- On Monday evening the Blowfish traveled down to take on the Gastonia Grizzlies at Sims Legion Park.
This is the first game of the second half of the season for Columbia. The Blowfish finished second in the Western Standings behind the Asheboro Copperheads.
The Blowfish started off the game with a bombardment of base hits, tallying five runs early in the top of the first, and one in the sixth. The Blowfish scored all six runs off of Grizzlies starter, Chris Harkey (Hofstra), who threw six innings giving up six runs off of nine hits, no walks, and one strikeout. Harkey was replaced in the seventh inning by Michael Martin (Manhattan College), giving up no runs, off of one hit, no walks, and three strikeouts.
The Grizzlies would try to pick away the Blowfish lead, scoring one run in the fifth and three in the seventh, though this wouldnt be enough to capsize the Blowfish.
Blowfish starter, David Duncan (Florida A&M) held down the Gastonia offense to one run off of four hits, one walk, and six strikeouts, through six innings of work.
Alex Carrasco (Florida A&M) came on in relief in the seventh; he faced three batters and walked all three. Carrasco gave up three runs, two earned in his appearance. Derrick Smith (College of Charleston), came on in relief for Carrasco, throwing three innings, giving up no runs off of one hit, no walks, and four strikeouts.
Duncan picked up the win bringing him to (2-3) on the season.
The Blowfish are now (18-11) on the season putting them in second place in the Western Standings of the Coastal Plain League.
The Columbia Blowfish will be back in action at home Wednesday night July 3rd hosting the 7th Annual USC Gamecock Alumni Baseball Team vs. The Blowfish, with first pitch set for 7:05pm. Gates open at 6:00pm. Join us after the game for Independence Fireworks at Capital City Stadium!
