HAMPTON, V.A - Peninsula (15-13, 1-0) scored three times in the first inning off of starter Adam Bray and it was enough to hang on for the 4-3 win over the Steamers (20-7, 0-1) on Monday night at War Memorial Stadium.

To begin the second half after clinching the Coastal Plain League's East first-half Division crown, Edenton sent righty Adam Bray (South Dakota State University) to the mound. For Bray it was his third start since joining the Steamers in early June. Alex Regan got the nod for the Pilots, Regan was making his third start of the season and fourth appearance overall.

Peninsula came out swinging aggressively against Bray in the bottom of the first inning, picking up back-to-back doubles from Bradon Reitano and Bill Cullen to take a 1-0 lead three batters into the game. Two batters later, with two outs, Taylor Ostrich knocked in Cullen with an RBI single and a 2-0 lead. Scott Burkett followed with a single that put runners on the corners. With Josh Silver batting, the Pilots executed a double steal which allowed Ostrich to come home and complete the scoring at 3-0 Pilots.

Peninsula, in the bottom of the third, added a run with two outs when Jordan Negrini struck out but was able to reach base on a two base throwing error by Jacob Reese (Eastern Illinois University). Ostrich struck again with an RBI single to push the lead to 4-0 Pilots.

Edenton got one back in the top of the fifth against Regan when Laz Villa singled (Reedley College) and moved to second when Reese reached on an error. Sam Bumpers connected for his fourth RBI of the season with a two-out single to cut the lead to 4-1.

Bray's final pitching line was five innings, six hits allowed, four runs (three earned), he did not issue a walk and struck out three hitters. With the loss Bray falls to 1-2 on the season.

In the top of the seventh against Josh Heddinger, who entered in relief of Regan after five innings, Edenton plated a run on a bases loaded sacrifice by pinch hitter Nick Miller (University of Northern Colorado) to cut the score to 4-2 Pilots.

Regan threw five innings and allowed three hits, one run (earned) on three walks and he struck out three, picking up his first victory of the season, improving to 1-2.

Edenton crept ever closer in the ball game, bring home another run in the top of the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Alex Delgado (Emmanuel College) that cut the Pilot lead to 4-3 but that was as close as the Steamers could get. Ryan Cook came out of the Pilots bullpen and picked up his fourth save of the season.

Edenton welcomes in the Thomasville Hi-Toms tomorrow night before heading out on the road for the next four days.
