Blizzard To Take On Top-Ranked Firecats

Green Bay Blizzard News Release

When this week's af2 Coaches Poll is released on Wednesday, the Green Bay Blizzard looks to rise into the Top 10 following their stunning 65-35 victory over the 4th-ranked Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers. The Florida Firecats, however, would appear deeply entrenched in the #1 spot following their 60-27 shellacking of the Birmingham Steeldogs.

The Firecats (9-2) took over the top spot last week after a 4-week tear through the American Conference South Division. In successive weeks, the Firecats posted dominating wins over the South Georgia Wildcats (64-28), Tennessee Valley Vipers (74-33), Macon Knights (66-54) and Birmingham Steeldogs (60-27). In fact, their only Division loss came in Week 1, 78-46 to the 2005 af2 Champion Memphis Xplorers.

The Blizzard heads to Florida for a rematch of last season's home finale, which the Firecats won 48-47 in dramatic fashion. On the final play of the game, the Firecats scored a TD to bring them within 1 at 47-46. With the clock reading 0:00 they attempted a 2-point conversion. Every one of the 5,632 fans at the Resch Center were on their feet and were loud enough to make the foundation shake, but it was not enough to stop the Firecats from stealing the victory.

In 2004 the Firecats won the af2 Championship, defeating the Peoria Pirates 39-26 in ArenaCup5. This season, it looks like the American Conference road to the Cup might go through Florida once again, as they currently hold a 1/2-game lead over the Xplorers for the South Division title and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. (The Firecats are currently tied with the 9-2 Spokane Shock of the National Conference West Division for the best record in the league.) The Blizzard knows that they will have their hands full this week, but recent success has given them the confidence they need to meet any challenge.

The Blizzard will return home for their next home game on Friday, July 7th against the Manchester Wolves. The game will feature the first-ever Indoors Fireworks Show in the Resch Center following the game.
