Green Bay Blizzard News Release
GREEN BAY, WI - The Green Bay Blizzard are excited to announce the signing of RB/KR Tony Nelson out of the University of Massachusetts. Nelson has excellent instincts out of the backfield, and also brings plenty of football experience to Green Bay. After workouts with several teams in 2010, including the Cleveland Browns and Washington Redskins, Tony signed with the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL, but was subsequently released due to injury. He participated in workouts with the Hartford Colonials and Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL in 2011 prior to signing with the Blizzard.
Blizzard Head Coach Rik Richards says of Nelson, "(Tony) is exactly the kind of back we are looking for. He gets north and south quickly and has great hands. We look forward to seeing what he can bring to the table."
As a redshirt player at UMass, Tony was a Walter Payton Award Candidate as the top offensive FCS player in his senior season, and garnered many awards including 2009 CAA All-Conference Second Team and 2009 College Sporting News Preseason Third Team All-American. In his four full seasons at UMass, Tony posted 2,787 yards on 532 carries and 25 touchdowns. Those numbers place him 6th on the UMass career rushing yards list, 5th in career carries, and 6th in career rushing touchdown. Nelson also turned in 12 career 100-yard games and six 150-yard games.
The Green Bay Blizzard are proud members of the Indoor Football League (IFL) and were named the 2011 IFL Franchise of the Year. The reigning Great Lakes Division Champions play all their home games at the Resch Center in Green Bay, WI. 2012 Season tickets are on SALE NOW, call 920-405-1264 to reserve your seat in the action!
