Blizzard Sign Two All-Conference Performers

December 23, 2009 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
Green Bay Blizzard News Release

The Green Bay Blizzard and Head Coach Rik Richards announce the signing of the teams first two players for the 2010 season. "It's extremely exciting to see our first roster taking shape," stated Blizzard Owner and President Jeff Royle. "The effort being put forth by Coach Richards to assemble a championship roster is very impressive." DB Carlton Bailey and RB Mike Malone were both All-Conference players at Western Carolina.

Defensive Back Carlton Bailey (5'-10" 185lbs.) is a Western Carolina graduate hailing from Jonesboro Georgia. In 2007 Bailey was a pre-season All-Southern Conference selection. In 2006 he had ten total tackles, including eight solo stops, with two interceptions in four games. As a sophomore, Bailey set Western Carolina strength and conditioning record in the summer of 2005 with a time of 3.97 in the pro shuttle and, in 2006, set a record in the L Drill with a time of 6.73. He was ranked seventh on the team with thirty three tackles. He added to interceptions, including a 28-yard return for a touchdown at Chattanooga. Bailey's freshman campaign helped WCU rank 15th nationally in pass defense (163.64 yards/game) while playing in ten games. Prior to Western, Carlton Bailey ranked among the nations' top 25 defensive backs in Athlon and Street and Smith. He was also a two-time first team all-region and all-area selection while attending Jonesboro HS.

Running Back Mike Malone (5'-10" 180lbs) is also a Western Carolina product. Malone's 2007 season saw him as a pre-season All-Southern Conference Return Specialist. Not only an All-American candidate in football, but is one of the top sprinters in the Southern Conference. He helped WCU win back-to-back SoCon Outdoor Track & Field Championships. In 2006, Malone played in all eleven games both on the kickoff return team and as the back-up tailback. He ranked second on the team in rushing yards. He returned thirty kicks for a team-high 663 yards for an average of 22.10 yards per return. Those numbers were good enough to rank him fifth in the Southern Conference and forty second in the nation in kickoff return average which helped WCU rank fourth in the conference and 40th in the nation in return yardage (20.5 ypg). Malone's sophomore season in 2005 saw him named First Team All-Southern Conference by both the coaches and media as a return specialist. He ranked second in the nation and led the SoCon in kick returns, averaging an impressive 31.29 yards per return.
