Austin Bruins News Release
With its playoff hopes essentially at stake, the Brookings Blizzard (18-25-9) clawed back from a 2-1 third period deficit to defeat the Austin Bruins (32-11-11) 3-2 Saturday at the Larson Ice Center in Brookings.
The first period saw just 11 combined shots between the Bruins and Blizzard. Austin took the lead on a power play with 6:43 left in the frame when Josh Wilkins (Cary, NC) capped of a tic-tac-toe passing play with a one-timer from the right circle.
The scoring chances picked up in the second period. The Bruins outshot Brookings 10-9 and added to their lead with Luke Forfar (Darien, IL) tipped a shot into the net in front of Blizzard goalie Ryan Kubic (St. Andrews, MB). Austin goaltender Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN) was stopping everything that came his way, until a TJ Samec (St. Paul, MN) blast was deflected in by Connor Hutchins (N. Richland Hills, TX).
Blizzard captain Beau Michaud (Cloquet, MN) took a check while tipping the game s tying goal into the net at 12:19 and Nate Colwell (Englewood, CO) gave Brookings its first lead when he snapped a shot past Kielly off a face-off win with 1:55 to play. A late Austin flurry at the goal mouth was kept out of the net by Kubic and the Blizzard defense, and Alex Pettersson s (Ockero, Sweden) buzzer-beating rocket from the point clanked off the post, as Brookings snapped the Bruins six-game winning streak.
Brookings moves to within three points of Aberdeen for the final Central Division playoff spot. Kielly suffered his first loss in his last ten starts, making 18 saves in the effort. Kubic made 19 saves in the win, his second in a row at home against the Bruins.
With six games to play in the regular season, the Bruins head home next weekend for two game against the Minnesota Wilderness at Riverside Arena in Austin. Game time is scheduled for 7:05pm both Friday and Saturday. Both games can be heard seen on fasthockey.com and heard on 1480AM KAUS. The Bruins then wrap up the season with four meetings against the Blizzard in the final two weekends of March.
