Bakersfield Blitz News Release

BAKERSFIELD, CA - The Bakersfield Blitz opened Training Camp 2007 on Saturday March 10th and continues through Thursday March 22nd. All practices are held at Bakersfield College (1801 Panorama Drive, Bakersfield, CA 93305) and are free and open to the public.

With so many high-powered offenses in Arena Football, the phase of the game that often gets overlooked is special teams. Head Coach Gary Compton (East Texas State University, '90) says he knows how important this part of the game can be.

"It's a huge part of the game. It can really make or break your team," said Compton.

The Blitz will rely this season on K Steve Baker (Arizona State, '00) to lead the special teams. "He's a professional," said Compton. "He comes out here everyday and gets his business done. I told him if he hits the net on kickoffs and makes all his extra points, we'll be in good shape."

While this is Baker's first experience playing Arena Football, he's no stranger to kicking. "I've been doing this for 20 years," said Baker. "You name it, from Canada to the NFL, and I've kicked there."

Kicking indoors does have its pros and cons. "The best part is, there's no wind and the field is flat, but on the other side, the goal posts are only nine feet apart," said Baker. In comparison, the NFL goal posts are 18.5 feet apart.

Blitz Bits: After scrimmaging on Sunday afternoon, the Blitz took off the pads on Monday night and practiced in helmets and shorts...During Sunday's scrimmage, the team ran 60 plays. "We did some things real well, but we saw some things that we need to get corrected," said Coach Compton...The Blitz are still bringing in new offensive linemen to add depth to that position; OL/DL Leon Moore (UNLV, '05) and OL/DL Ibok Ibok (UNLV, '04) have been brought in to Training Camp.
