Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
Fort Worth - The Oklahoma City Blazers scored three unanswered goals in the final eleven minutes of the third period to cap off a 6-3 win over the Fort Worth Brahmas in Tuesday night Central Hockey League action at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
The game was a back and forth affair from the opening face off. Fort Worth looked poised to claim an easy win in the early stages of the game after wingers Bret DeCecco and Jimmy Sokol scored goals nine seconds apart (at the :58 second mark and the 1:07 mark) to stake the Brahmas to a 2-0 lead before the majority of the Convention Center crowd had made it to their seats. DeCecco's goal was his Brahmas team high 7th of the season.
The Blazers, however, answered back, thanks to a strong powerplay. Oklahoma City scored three consecutive powerplay goals in the final 14:21 of the first period (by d-man Tyler Fleck, center Kahlil Thomas, and defenseman Gio Flamminio) to take a 3-2 lead at the first intermission.
After a scoreless second period of play, Fort Worth took the ice to start the third period intent on a comeback. The Brahmas persistent offensive attacks were finally rewarded 4:38 into the third period when forward Ben Gustavson fired his third goal of the season into the Oklahoma City net.
The Blazers responded quickly to the Gustavson goal. Just over four minutes later, at the 8:51 mark of the third, Oklahoma City centerman Kahlil Thomas scooped up a loose puck from just outside the left side of the Brahmas goal crease and snapped it past Fort Worth goaltender Larry Sterling. Thomas's goal, his second of the game and third of the season, proved to be the game winning marker. Blazers forward Graham Dearle pushed the Oklahoma City lead to 5-3 at the 11:12 mark of the third with his first goal of the season. Then, with just 42 seconds remaining in the game, Oklahoma City center Garret Prosofsky finished off the Brahmas with his eighth goal of the season into an empty Fort Worth net.
Oklahoma City goaltender Sean Connors was named the first star of the game for his 38 save performance. After giving up the first two Fort Worth goals early on, Connors stopped 38 of the final 39 Brahmas shots sent his way to help his team to the victory. Sterling took the loss in net for Fort Worth, allowing five Oklahoma City goals on 30 shots.
The loss by Fort Worth (6-3-1) drops the Brahmas into a first place tie in the CHL's Northeast Divsion with the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs. The win for Oklahoma City, their third in a row, raises the Blazers record to 4-6-0 on the year. The Brahmas will look to get back on the winning track later this week when they travel to Memphis, Tennessee for a pair of games against the Memphis RiverKings. Fort Worth will play Memphis at the DeSoto Civic Center on Thursday, Nov. 17 and Friday, Nov. 18. Both games will faceoff at 7:05 p.m.
