SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah Blaze are pleased to announce the signing of FB Devin Johnson (6-3, 240, Utah State) in preparations for their second divisional matchup this Friday, April 15th at 7 p.m. versus the Spokane Shock at EnergySolutions Arena.
Johnson joins the Blaze after spending two seasons with the Utah State Aggies. As a junior, he played in all 12 games, tallying 20.0 total tackles, including 3.5 for a loss, one blocked kick and one pass breakup. His top three outings were all on the road, logging a career-high four tackles at New Mexico State while tallying three stops each at Texas A&M and Idaho. He also earned Academic All-WAC in 2009.
Prior to Utah State, he was a two-year letter winner and a two-time all-Western States Conference honoree after earning first-team honors as a sophomore at Citrus Community College. In 2007, Johnson recorded 64.0 total tackles, five tackles for loss and two quarterback sacks in helping Citrus to the Orange County Bowl, finishing with a 6-5 record. As he freshman in 2006, he recorded 22.0 total tackles, seven tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. He also earned all- WSC honorable mention accolades as a freshman and was named Western States Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 17, 2006 after recording 4.0 total tackles, one tackle for loss and one sack.
The Blaze are preparing to take on the defending ArenaBowl XXIII Champion Spokane Shock this Friday, April 15th at 7 p.m. at EnergySolutions Arena. This marks the first of two meetings this season between the two franchises and first match-up for Blaze Offensive Coordinator Matthew Sauk against his former team.
