Boltus Inks Deal with Winnipeg
SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Blaze quarterback Jason Boltus has been placed on the Other League Exempt list after signing with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League, the franchise announced Thursday. Boltus becomes the seventh member of the Blaze to sign a contract with a CFL or NFL franchise in the past year.
"As a franchise, the Utah Blaze takes great pride in giving its players the opportunity to showcase their skills and move up in the ranks of professional football," said Head Coach Ron James. "Jason is a great leader and has all the tools you look for in a quarterback. We are extremely proud of Jason for earning this opportunity, and wish him the best as he continues his career in the Canadian Football League."
Boltus (6-3, 215, Hartwick) previously played in the Canadian Football League with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats from 2009-2011. He entered the Arena Football League in 2012 as a member of the Spokane Shock before landing with the Blaze this past season.
During the 2013 campaign, Boltus appeared in 14 games for the Blaze and started five of the final seven contests. In total, he completed 118-of-188 attempts (62.8%) for 1,425 yards with 31 touchdowns and seven interceptions while adding 140 yards and another score on 23 rushing attempts. His tenure as a starter with the Blaze included a 62-55 victory over the South Division champion Jacksonville Sharks in which Utah set a franchise record by scoring 28 points in the first quarter.
During his collegiate career at Division III Hartwick College (Oneonta, NY), Boltus shattered school records for passing yards (13,276) and passing touchdowns (134). He was named the Empire 8 Conference Offensive Player of the Year and earned All-Conference accolades after throwing for 3,934 yards and 34 touchdowns during his senior season in 2008.
