July 30, 2013 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Utah Blaze News Release
SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Blaze wide receiver LaVaughn Macon has been named the Arena Football League's Playmaker of Week 19 for his performance in the team's 48-46 victory over the Cleveland Gladiators. In addition, Macon and offensive lineman Shannon Tevaga were awarded the AFL's highlight of the Week for a touchdown celebration that gained national attention.
Macon (5-7, 170, New Mexico Highlands) racked up 228 all-purpose yards in the team's season finale last Saturday. The rookie wide receiver hauled in a 39-yard pass on the first play from scrimmage to set up a touchdown by teammate Ben Stallings. Macon made his biggest impact on the special teams end, where he collected 186 yards on six kickoff returns.
In the fourth quarter, the Gladiators had narrowed Utah's advantage to just two points following a touchdown pass from Danny Southwick to Thyron Lewis. However, Macon answered the call and halted Cleveland's momentum, as he fielded the ensuing kickoff and eluded defenders while sprinting 54 yards to the end zone for the touchdown.
Following the score, Macon and Tevaga paid tribute to professional wrestler Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson by performing his signature finishing move. In a choreographed celebration, Macon was knocked to the ground by a clothesline from a teammate and Tevaga proceeded to perform the "People's Elbow" drop. The celebration has gained attention from nationally sports media outlets such as ESPN and Deadspin.com, gathering over 120,000 views on YouTube in just two days.
