New Orleans VooDoo News Release
NEW ORLEANS (April 13, 2011) - The New Orleans VooDoo (0-4) will make the trek to the undefeated Cleveland Gladiators (3-0) on Saturday, April 16 in the Quicken Loans Center. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CST.
Fans can tune into the game on the radio at "Rush Radio" 99.5 FM WRNO, or watch it live on the internet via www.niftytv.com/afl.
Both the VooDoo and Gladiators are coming off of a bye week with the VooDoo going idle after a 61-35 loss to the Georgia Force in The Graveyard, while the Gladiators won at Chicago, 55-48, to improve to 3-0 for the first time since 2008.
"They are a good team with some great coaches," said head football coach Derek Stingley about Cleveland. "They are the best team that we have seen to this point, and their 3-0 record proves it."
The two teams have only meet once prior to Saturday's matchup with the VooDoo winning 63-24 in 2008 in The Graveyard. Cleveland entered the game 3-0, and after the loss to New Orleans, the Gladiators lost three consecutive.
However, the Gladiators turned their season around, going deep into the playoffs before losing to eventual ArenaBowl Champion Philadelphia. Quarterbacking the Gladiators that season was current VooDoo offensive coordinator Raymond Philyaw.
The VooDoo feature wide receiver and kick returner PJ Berry who ranks second in the AFL in all-purpose yards (224.8 yards/game). Berry had accounted for 200-plus in every game this season until New Orleans' loss to Georgia.
New Orleans also will have a new-look secondary with only Jerron Wishom returning to the active lineup from last game. The team activated rookie Brian Reynolds from the injured reserve list this week, while also bringing in fellow rookie John Green and arena football veteran Matt Jackson.
The Gladiators rank in the Top 10 in every major statistical category in the AFL, including a third-best rank in scoring offense (60.7 points/game) and scoring defense (40.3 points/game).
