Baltimore Blast News Release
Baltimore - The Baltimore Blast announced today that the team will open training camp for the 2007-08 MISL season on Monday, September 24 and that the four-time MISL Champions have signed midfielder Scott Buete, a former Maryland Terrapin. The Blast will train Monday through Friday at 10 a.m. at Du Burns Arena leading up to the team's season opener on Friday, October 19th against the defending champion Philadelphia KiXX. The Blast has also finalized a four-game TV deal with Maryland Public Television.
The Blast will enter the season led by head coach Danny Kelly and assistant coach David Bascome who will return to the field this year after missing most of last season with a knee injury. The team will be led by veterans Denison Cabral, P.J. Wakefield, Billy Nelson and Giuliano Celenza and will feature several young players including 2006 MISL MVP Adauto Neto, Mike Lookingland and Matt Watson.
The Blast will host the Philadelphia KiXX and New Jersey Ironmen in a preseason tournament on Saturday, September 29 at Du Burns Arena beginning at 10 a.m. Tickets for the preseason tournament will be available at the door on the 19st for $5 and will be good for admission to all three games throughout the day. All proceeds will go to the Friends of Mike Woodard Fund.
The Blast selected Buete, a 5-8, 160-pound midfielder from Bowie, in the fourth round of the 2006 MISL Dispersal Draft. Buete, who played collegiate soccer at Maryland, finished his career with 92 games played, 11 goals and 24 assists (46 total points). He was named First-Team NSCAA All-American and First-Team All-ACC after his senior year. After college he spent the 2004 and 2005 seasons with the Chicago Fire of the Major Soccer League where he recorded two assists in 21 games. Buete has played the last two United Soccer League seasons with the Atlanta Silverbacks. He recorded two goals and one assist (five points) in 27 regular season games en route to the team's Friday-night USL Semifinal match against the Portland Timbers. Buete, a 1999 graduate of Bowie High School, led the school to the Prince George's County championship in 1995, 1996 and 1997 and to the state final in 1997. He also played for the Maryland ODP U.S. Regional Team for seven years.
In other Blast news, the team has finalized a four-game TV deal with Maryland Public Television. The four-game deal marks the first time that MPT will broadcast a live professional sporting event. Three of the four games will be broadcast on MPT's digital channel and the fourth game will be available on the analog channel. MPT has more than two million viewers weekly and can be seen in Maryland on Channel 22 and on Comcast Digital Channel 201. MPT is a mission-driven, membership organization that engages the community through quality programs and services.
