Baltimore, MD - The Baltimore Blast fall to Utica City FC 6-3 in their third meeting of the season to sit at 3-2 on the season.
Each team began the game with a number of great chances, but both goalkeepers brought their best today and kept the score at 0-0 through much of the quarter. Mauricio Salles scored the opening goal for Utica City from a set piece to give UCFC a 1-0 lead. A disallowed Utica City FC goal late in the quarter opened up an opportunity for the Blast to capitalize on a set piece of their own. A Vini Dantas shot was denied by UCFC goalkeeper Andrew Coughlin to end the first quarter.
The second quarter saw a number of Blast chances from Vini Dantas and Andrew Hoxie hit the crossbar, but could not find their way into the net. Utica City FC extended their lead to 2-0 with three minutes remaining in the half from a Slavisa Ubiparipovic goal. A minute later, Joey Tavernese scored his seventh goal of the season from a Nate Bordeau assist to put Utica City FC up 3-0 heading into halftime.
The Blast could not have asked for a better start to the second half. Two goals in the first forty-five seconds from Adriano Dos Santos and Vini Dantas put the Blast down only one goal. Both goals were assisted by Jonatas Melo, who collected his sixth and seventh assist on the season. Utica City extended their lead to 4-2 with a goal from Mauricio Salles, his second of the game. Juan Pereira cut the lead back down to one with a shot into the top right corner. The Blast trailed 4-3 at the end of the third quarter.
Liam Callahan scored his fifth goal of the season from a Slavisa Ubiparipovic assist to extend the Utica City FC lead to 5-3. With minutes remaining, the Blast put six attackers out on the field to make up the deficit. An assist from Utica City goalkeeper Andrew Coughlin set up Andre Braithwaite with the goal to seal the 6-3 victory for Utica City FC.
Jonatas Melo lead all Blast scorers with two points from two assists, while Adriano Dos Santos, Vini Dantas, and Juan Pereira all chipped in with a goal. Utica City Forward Mauricio Salles led all goal scorers with two goals and forward Slavisa Ubiparipovic recorded a goal and an assist on the night.
The Blast are back in action Thursday, January 3rd when they travel to Mississauga to take on the Metrostars at 7:35 p.m. EST.
