Blast Fall in Overtime to Comets 5-4

The Blast hosted the Missouri Comets on Friday night in a matchup of two top teams in the MASL. In a hard fought game the Comets defeated the Blast in overtime 5-4.

Both teams came out focusing on defense and possession. In a first quarter where there was only one stoppage, no goals were scored. Goalkeeper William Vanzela recorded 3 saves in the quarter while Kaoru Forbess and Adriano Dos Santos recorded blocks.

Before the end of the first the Blast would go on the power play after a Comets penalty. Onua Obasi would score the opening goal of the game on that power play moments into the second quarter. This was Obasi's seventh goal of the season and was assisted by Pat Healey. At the 4:39 mark Tony Donatelli would record his 16th goal of the assist off of Pat Healey's 15th assist. Before the end of the half the Comets would get on the board with a goal from Max Touloute. At the half the Blast led 2-1.

The Comets would be the only team to find the back of the net during the third quarter. Leo Gibson would tie the game at 2 and the 14:42 mark. The Comets would then gain the lead with back to back goals from Robert Palmer and John Sosa. The Blast entered the final quarter trailing 4-2.

The Blast would regain momentum at the 11:54 mark when Jinho Kim recorded his fifth goal of the season to bring the Blast within 1. Tony Donatelli would tie the game at 4 with his second goal of the night assisted by Adriano Dos Santos. At the end of regulation the game was tied 4-4.

In the overtime the Comets would score at the 6:46 mark to earn the victory. Valid Assadpour scored the game winner.

The Blast fall to 13-3 on the season. The Blast were led offensively by Tony Donatelli who scored 2 goals and Pat Healey who recorded 2 assists. Healey would also add 3 blocks while goalkeeper William Vanzela recorded 6 saves on the night. The Blast will return home on Sunday for their regular season finale against the Harrisburg Heat. Kickoff is at 5:05 p.m. from the Royal Farms Arena.
