SARASOTA, FL – Buddy Blair allowed only one run and three hits over seven innings as the Cardinals beat the Sarasota Reds 3-1 on Tuesday night.

Blair (1-0), had spent the early part of the season with the Springfield Cardinals (AA), but was off to a 1-6 start with an ERA of 8.50. His struggles prompted his return to Palm Beach roster, but if Tuesday is any indication, his stay will be a short one.

Blair struck out seven of the 25 hitters he faced and only walked one.

The Cardinals jumped on the board in the fifth on a double by Jason Motte that scored Jonny Kaplan from first. The Reds tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, but the Cardinals answered with two runs in the eighth to put things out of reach.

Kaplan led off the eighth with a walk and scored on a double by Mike McCoy. Rayner Laya followed with a single to drive home McCoy.

Andy Cavazos pitched a scoreless eighth in relief, and Mark Worrell came on in the ninth to notch is eighth save of the year, giving Blair his first win.

Last year with Palm Beach, Blair finished 11-10 with a 4.40 ERA.

Game three of the series is scheduled for Wednesday night at 7:00.
