Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (5-1) defeated the South Carolina Stingrays (3-3) 2-1 in double overtime before a crowd of 5,712 at TECO Arena on Saturday night. The victory gives Florida a 2-0 series lead in the best of five Southern Division semi-final series.
In the second overtime at the 3:48 mark, Florida forward Jay Legault followed up a rebound off of a Damian Surma shot and wristed the puck past South Carolina netminder Kirk Daubenspeck for the victory.
It appeared Florida won the game in the first overtime on a scramble in front of the net. Defenseman Tim O'Connell had jammed a loose puck into the net but referee Terry Koharski said it was no goal because he had blown the whistle before the puck crossed the line.
South Carolina got the scoring started in the first period when Dustin Johner's shot snuck past Florida goaltender Robb Zepp and under the cross bar. The score would remain that way until the third period.
Florida tied the game when Reggie Berg streaked down the left wing, faked a shot, got around a defenseman and sent a shot that squeezed between the legs of Daubenspeck at the 11:34 mark.
Rob Zepp stopped 30 of 31 shots. Kirk Daubenspeck stopped 52 of 54 shots. Florida finished 0 for 8 on the power
play while South Carolina went 1 for 5.
Florida and South Carolina will face-off in Game 3 next Thursday, April 22nd in South Carolina. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
