Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - Florida Everblades President and General Manager Craig Brush along with Head Coach Greg Poss announced today that defenseman Kyle Lawson and goaltender Bobby Goepfert have been assigned to the team from the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League.
Goepfert (pronounced: GEP-fert) is the first goalie assigned to the roster from the Everblades' affiliates. The 27-year-old spent the 2009-10 season in Germany where he played for the Hamburg Freezers. In 25 games Goepfert posted an 8-14-0 record with a 2.99 goals against average and a .914 save percentage with the Freezers.
"Bobby is a very good, quick goalie," said Poss. "He's good side-to-side, is very mobile in the net and is good at playing the puck. He's had success before at this level and is a good team guy, so we're excited about having him."
Prior to playing overseas last season Goepfert split his first two seasons between the ECHL and AHL. The Kings Park, New York saw action in 13 games with the South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL in 2008-09 going 7-2-4 with a 1.99 GAA and a .937 save percentage. He also played in four games at the AHL level with Hershey and Portland that season combining to go 1-1-1 with a 2.58 GAA.
A 6th round draft pick by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2002, Goepfert made his professional debut in 2007-08 playing in 33 games with the Augusta Lynx of the ECHL. That season he was 16-15-1 with a 2.60 GAA and a .912 save percentage.
Lawson joins the Everblades after completing a four-year collegiate career at the University of Notre Dame in 2009-10. Last season the 23-year-old picked up 22 points (4g, 18a) and 44 penalty minutes in 38 games with the Fighting Irish. Following the college hockey schedule Lawson made his professional debut with the Albany River Rats of the AHL skating in 10 games and collecting one assist.
"Kyle is a good puck moving defenseman," Poss added. "He's a good, strong skater and is good on the power play. We think he'll fit very nicely into the system we want to play."
A 7th round draft pick by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2005, Lawson totaled 90 points (17g, 73a) in 161 career games at Notre Dame. The New Hudson, Michigan native was never lower than fifth in team scoring during his career with the Fighting Irish and was the top scoring defenseman for Notre Dame last year.
Along with the additions of Goepfert and Lawson, the Everblades also announced today that they have released forward Oleg Kuzmin and defenseman Tommy Powers.
