
Blacksher Named Pitcher of the Week

WICHITA, KS- Wichita Wingnuts right-handed pitcher Derek Blacksher has been named the American Association Pitcher of the Week for July 26th through August 2nd.
On July 29th, Blacksher fired seven shutout innings over the Pensacola Pelicans in the rubber match of a three-game series at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium and earned his seventh win of the season. Blacksher yielded just three hits, two of which were infield hits, while walking one and striking out five.
Blacksher is 7-2 for the season in 14 starts and his 3.36 ERA ranks ninth in the American Association. In 85.2 IP this season, Blacksher has yet to allow a home run, the longest such streak of any pitcher in the league. A current resident of Lake Charles, LA, Blacksher earned the win in the 2009 American Association All-Star Game, in the North's 6-2 victory over the South.
Blacksher is in his third season of professional baseball and first with the Wingnuts. The McNeese State University product won 10 games for the Frontier League's Gateway Grizzlies last season and was named the team's Pitcher of the Year. He joins Greg Porter (twice) and Dustan Mohr as Wingnuts players who have earned Batter/Pitcher of the Week honors in 2009.
