Blackhawks upset Tycoons, 101-94

Dallas, TX. The Bellevue Blackhawks professional basketball team mounted a balanced attack with five players scoring in double figures - led by guard Tim Ellis' 42 points - in upsetting the heavily-favored #4 seeded Texas Tycoons in the first round of the ABA playoffs on the Tycoons home court in Fort Worth. Bellevue, the 13th seeded team, led at halftime, 48-44, opened up a ten point lead in the third quarter, and held on for a 101-94 victory. Chris Davis led the Tycoons with 23 points.

The Blackhawks roster included all local players, Jimmie Haywood (Franklin High School/Oregon), Justin Murray (Washington State), Matt Glynn (Univesity of Puget Sound), and Dontay Harris of Tacoma, each chipped in eleven points; Brian Dennis (Western Washington University) grabbed eight rebounds, including two crucial offensive boards in the last two minutes of the game. Glynn led the victors with seven assists.

Bellevue now moves on to the second round and will face the #5 seeded Maryland Nighthawks on their home court this weekend. Other local players include: Jim Rainwater, Chief Sealth High School/University of Portland; Jujuan Winesberry, University of Washington; and Brian Bunche of Seattle.

In addition to the nine local players, Blackhawks head coach Rick Turner is a Bellevue who is the former head coach and athletic director at Bellevue Community College, associate head coach Harold Wright is a graduate of Washington State and assistant coach Russ Schoene is a former player for the Seattle Sonics and assistant coach at the University of Washington.
