Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Waterloo Black Hawks rallied out of a two-goal hole in Columbus Friday to defeat the Ohio Junior Blue Jackets 3-2 in a shootout.
Facing the deficit in the final minute of the second period, Jordan Samuels-Thomas shoveled in a puck through traffic on the powerplay, cutting Ohio's advantage in half.
Midway through the third, Billy Maday's shot was kicked aside while he was coming up ice, right to Brock Montpetit who netted the rebound. It was Maday's second assist of the game.
The remainder of regulation and overtime were scoreless. Montpetit scored on the Hawks fist shootout chance, but Patrick Goebel answered in kind. Craig Smith made it three-in-a-row to score before the next four chances were turned aside. Derek Roehl saved the day temporarily for Ohio, tying the shootout at 2-2 with the Blue Jacket's fourth shot. The fifth and sixth rounds were scoreless, but then Scott Pavelski pushed the Hawks in front with a low shot between Pasquale Terrazzano's pads. Matt DiGirolamo made a final save to seal the win.
The Black Hawks meet the Blue Jackets for a rematch at noon Saturday.
