Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Waterloo Black Hawks uncorked a five-goal third period to run away from the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders for a 7-3 victory Friday at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
Not quite two-and-a-half minutes into the final frame, Ryan Papa rolled the rebound of an Ian McCoshen shot over the goal line to break a 2-2 tie. At 9:15, J.T. Stenglein gave the Hawks their first multi-goal lead of the game, knocking the puck out of midair after his centering pass was batted back his way on a rush up ice.
Beginning at 13:00, Waterloo scored two more in less than two minutes to put the game out of reach. Taylor Cammarata's long shot knicked a RoughRouder before sailing to the top corner. At 14:56, Stenglein passed up the opportunity to try for a hat trick, feeding the puck instead to Vince Hinostroza to bury into an open side. Gerald Mayhew notched a RoughRider tally less than a minute later, but with goaltender Steve Michalek lifted and the net completely empty, Hinostroza tallied again with 2:04 remaining.
Power plays had led to the only goals of the opening period, one for each side. The Hawks struck first at 3:20 when Stenglein flipped in his own rebound from the top of the crease. On the other side of the rink at 8:48, Dylan Steman scored from similarly close range. Michalek made the tie stand up to intermission with 20 first period saves.
The teams exchanged goals again in the second, with power plays continuing to be a factor. Seconds after a Black Hawks' advantage ended, McCoshen blasted a shot into the net for a go-ahead score. However, Cedar Rapids broke sustained shorthanded pressure in their own zone, with Davey Middleton leading a breakout for a power play score at 6:43.
Cal Petersen made 35 saves in the win, while Michalek suffered the loss despite turning away 42 chances. Waterloo's victory was the team's fourth in five starts versus the RoughRiders. The Hawks have claimed all three meetings at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena, scoring seven goals in each visit. With the win, the Hawks also built their lead in the Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup series.
Saturday, the Black Hawks are back at Young Arena for a second consecutive Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup matchup, hosting a 7:05 faceoff against the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Good seats are still available for the game and can be ordered online from waterlooblackhawks.com or by calling (319) 291-7680.
