Black Hawks Extend Winning Streak to Four

The Waterloo Black Hawks hockey team continued its hot play with a pair of wins this past weekend to run their winning streak to four games. The Hawks won in overtime Friday night in Chicago and followed that up with a solid home win over Green Bay on Saturday night.
Friday January 2, 2004- Waterloo 4 Chicago 3 (Overtime)
The Waterloo Black Hawks got the 2004 portion of their schedule off to good start with an overtime win in Chicago versus the Steel. The Black Hawks jumped out to the early lead on a Joel Hanson (Elk River, MN) scored a power play goal with just 30 seconds left in the opening period to put Waterloo up 1-0 after one. Matt Fornataro (Calgary, Alberta) extended the Waterloo lead to two early in the second with an unassisted goal.
Chicago cut the lead in half as Matt Clackson scored at the 7:15 mark of the second period. Zach Bearson (Naperville, IL) helped Waterloo regain the two-goal edge as he scored a power play goal at 11:41 of the second period on the power play. Waterloo carried a 3-2 lead into the third period, but Chicago tied the game on a Ben Geelan even strength goal with just 12 minutes left in the contest.
The game would head to overtime when Black Hawks defenseman Jon Paul Testwuide (Vail, CO) scored the game-winning goal 2:36 into the extra period to send the Hawks to the win. Black Hawk goaltender Kevin Regan (South Boston, MA) stopped 25-28 shots for the win in net.
Saturday January 3, 2004- Waterloo 5 Green Bay 3
Saturday the Hawks hosted the Green Bay Gamblers in a key Eastern Division contest. Waterloos Tim Madsen (Elk River, MN) led the way by registering a hat trick in a 5-3 Black Hawk win. Waterloo got off to a quick start as Joel Hanson scored the games first goal off a Green Bay turnover to give Waterloo the 1-0 lead after one. The Gamblers tied the game late in the second period as Eric Ehn batted home a rebound to tie the game at one. Jesse Vesel (Hibbing, MN) helped Waterloo regain the lead just a 1:20 later with his second goal of the season to put Waterloo up 2-1 after two.
Madsen then went to work scoring a pair of goals early in the third to put Waterloo up 4-1. Green Bay did shave the lead down to one at 4-3 on a pair of goals five minutes apart mid-way through the third. Madsen struck again just 22 seconds after the final Gambler goal to complete the hat trick and send the Hawks to the 5-3 win. Kevin Regan stopped 29-32 shots in net for the win.
Waterloo will now hit the road for three straight contests, beginning with a Western trip this upcoming weekend. Friday night the Hawks will be in Kearney, NE to take on the USHL league leading Tri-City Storm, followed by a contest in Lincoln, NE versus the Stars. Tomorrow night catch the Waterloo Black Hawks Coaches show live from Peppers Sports Pub and Grille starting at 6:05. The Coaches show will recap this past weeks Hawks games and preview the upcoming weekend, and visit with the Black Hawks players who were a part of the Viking Cup team in Camrose, Alberta.
