Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa - Over 200 promising players were selected during Phase II of the United States Hockey League Draft on Tuesday, including 19 picks by the Waterloo Black Hawks.

Waterloo made four choices in the first three rounds, including a trio of forwards and one defenseman. Brendan McMorrow led the group in the eighth overall slot. McMorrow has spent the last two seasons with USA Hockey's National Team Development Program and just returned from the IIHF World Under-18 Championships with a silver medal. During USHL league play with the NTDP, McMorrow has tallied 14 goals and 18 assists over 65 regular season appearances.

Second Round choice Ryan Zaremba also has notable junior and international experience. He spent last season with the Sherwood Park Crusaders in the AJHL and BCHL, while also taking time to help Canada West win the 2023 World Junior A Challenge just before Christmas.

The Hawks claimed a pair of prep products in the third round: defenseman Brady Peddle from the Bishop Kearney 16U team, then forward Kaeden Hawkins from Shattuck-St. Mary's. Following a two-round break, Waterloo was busiest during the sixth round, making four choices. They included goaltender Phileas Lachat (recently a member of Switzerland's World Under-18 roster), defenseman Morgan Brady, forward Kale Dach (both played Junior A hockey in western Canada last season), and defenseman Sam Peckham, a teammate of current Black Hawk Jackson Nevers on Edina High School's 2024 Minnesota AA Championship squad.

By position, Waterloo chose nine forwards, seven defensemen, and three goaltenders.

Many of the players selected during Phase II of the USHL Draft will have an opportunity to compete for a 2024/25 Black Hawks roster spot. Waterloo also picked ten players during Phase I of the draft on Monday. Those skaters - all born in 2008 - will likely be part of future Black Hawks teams.
