
Black Hawk Players Aide in World Junior A Challenge Win

The U.S. Junior Select Team earned the gold medal Sunday at the World Junior A Challenge in Camrose, Alberta with a 7-1 win against Canada West.
Waterloo's Lee Moffie scored the first goal of the game during a power play 5:06 after the opening face-off. David Gerths and Mike Cichy also scored during the opening 20 minutes as Team USA took a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.
The Hawks' Craig Smith assisted on two second period goals, as the U.S. scored four times to break the game open. The puck was put in by Max Nicastro, Josh Birkholz, Josh Balch, and Danny Kristo.
Team USA completed the competition with a 4-1 record, falling to Germany in the opening game, then rallying back to defeat Canada East, Russia, Canada East again, and Canada West.
Cichy led all scorers in the tournament with five goals and five assists in ten games. Smith was fourth in tournament scoring with three goals and five assists.
Other Black Hawks participating included Moffie (one goal, two assists), Nick Larson (two assists), and Joe Howe (one appearance in goal). Black Hawk trainer Todd Klein also served as the Junior Select Team trainer.
Belarus was the only opponent Team USA did not meet during the tournament.
