Cowlitz Black Bears News Release

Wenatchee: June 17, 2012: In a game with many ups and downs, controversial calls, and changes in momentum, the Cowlitz Black Bears outlasted the Wenatchee AppleSox 5-4 in 10 innings to move their league record to 4-8.

The Black Bears took a 3-0 lead into the fourth inning on the strength of a Ben Swinford (Cornell) RBI double, Scott Harkin (Loyola Marymount) sacrifice fly, and a Kyle Kuck (Santa Ana) run on a passed ball. Wenatchee got their runs of their own in the seventh and the game eventually went into extra innings.

With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the tenth, both Harkin and Austin Diemer (Cal State Fullerton) drew bases-loaded walks to put the Black Bears ahead 5-3. After Wenatchee got a run in the bottom half of the inning and had bases loaded with one out, Kody Watts (U of Portland) got two straight strikeouts to end the game.

"This was a big win for us," said Black Bears Manager Tim Matz. "We've been close a lot like this all season long and it's nice to get one on the road against the best team in the league."

The Black Bears next home game is against the Corvallis Knights on Tuesday, June 19. It will be Azteca $2 Tuesday where general admission tickets, hot dogs, soda, and beer are all $2 apiece.
