Cowlitz Black Bears News Release

Longview: Paced by a five run second inning, the Cowlitz Black Bears played a great all-around game and defeated the Kitsap Blue Jackets 7-2 on Saturday night at Story Field. The Black Bears are now 14-19 in WCL play.

After Kitsap took the lead with two runs in the top of the second inning, the Black Bears rallied with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Matt Ozanne (Santa Clara) led off the inning with a double and Ben Swinford (Cornell) brought him around with a two-bagger of his own. Austin Wobrock (Orange Coast) scored Swinford on an RBI groundout. After a Kitsap error with two outs and nobody on, the Black Bears scored three more runs. Brian Frattali (Portland) drew a bases loaded walk and Konnor Armijo (Santa Ana) had a two-run single.

The Black Bears added insurance runs in both the sixth and eighth. Austin Diemer (Cal State Fullerton) had an RBI groundout in the sixth and then tripled in the eighth. Diemer was injured on the play so Nick Paxton pinch-ran for him and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brian Carroll (UCLA).

Felipe Perez (UCLA) got the win for the Black Bears, going five innings and allowing just two runs with no walks. Cody Rogina (UC Riverside) was perfect in two innings of relief and Ian Ekery (Central Arizona) and Koby Gauna (Cal State Fullerton) each pitched scoreless innings to prevent a Kitsap comeback.

The Black Bears next home game is Sunday, July 15 against the Kitsap Blue Jackets and it will be Best Care- Local Care Presents Kids Club & Senior Sundays. There will be a $2 discount for all seniors. Kids Club members get in for free. Kids run the bases after the game.
