Maryland Black Bears News Release

The Maryland Black Bears finish off a tough stretch in the schedule that saw them play three series in an eight day span. This time it was the New Jersey Titans coming down to Piney Orchard Ice Arena for a Thursday evening contest. And after a hard fought game, it was the Black Bears winning by the score of 2-1.

New Jersey forward Anthony Calafiore got the scoring started in the first period, slamming home a one-timer in the power play to make it 1-0. The Titans appeared to get a 2-0 lead with another power play goal by Evan Werner, but it was overturned due to a high stick. Maryland starting goalie Michael Morelli was pulled due to injury after the first period and replaced by Tristan Mecenas.

In the third period Maryland got the offense going with a game tying goal from forward Branden Piku, scoring on a rebound shot from Tanner Rowe to tie the game 2-2. Then, with under 90 seconds to go, Black Bears' forward Luke Mountain put the puck toward the net where it was redirected by defenseman Bryan Huggins to the top right corner and in for a 2-1 lead Maryland would not relinquish.

The Maryland Black Bears and New Jersey Titans rematch Friday evening at Piney Orchard Ice Arena. Puck drop will be at 6:30 PM ET and the game can be streamed on HockeyTV.
