June 28, 2003 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Berkshire Black Bears News Release

The two big first inning doubles gave Elmira the edge to get even with Berkshire in this weekend series at Wahconah Park. Elmira leftfielder, Rafael Alvarez crushed the ball to the right-centerfield gap, which allowed Cleatus Davidson to score from second, giving the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. Then with two outs Brian Jones hit an RBI double to the left -centerfield gap, making it 2-0 after the top of the first inning. Elmira added one run in the 6th inning when Ryan Lehr hit an RBI double with Scott Hunter on third base. The Black Bears offence had been quiet all night until Pete Paciorek hit a single to right field in 8th inning breaking up Elmira starter Dan Head’s bid for a no-hitter.

Head did not allow a hit through seven and a third innings and made his record (2-3) with the win. Chris McGee closed up the final inning, throwing a perfect 1-2-3 ninth for his third save of the year. Black Bears starting pitcher, Rick Guttormson, who drops to (3-4) gave up three runs, one earned, over seven innings, striking out two Elmira batters. With the loss the Black Bears have now been shut out in three of their last five games.

Sunday’s 2:05pm rubber game with match Berkshire’s Dan Henderson (0-4) against the Pioneer’s Geronimo Mendoza (3-3).
