Allentown Ambassadors News Release

The Allentown Ambassadors led 6-5 going into the ninth, but the Spirit rallied for four runs and won the game 9-6 Saturday night in Allentown.

The Spirit jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, with some help from the Ambassador defense. John Schmitz began it with a one out infield single. Then Michael Tejada struck out and Carlos Sepulveda doubled. With runners on second and third, shortstop Jorge Diaz booted a grounder from Frank Charles, allowing Schmitz to score. Eddie Muth then doubled home Sepulveda.

The Ambassadors added an unearned run of their own in the bottom of the second, but the Spirit would add two more runs in the fifth. Jason Startari doubled with one out, then Marcus Agramonte reached on another error on Diaz, scoring Startari. Schmitz then doubled home Agramonte. The Spirit added another unearned run in the sixth, this time a Kevin Moore throwing error on a dropped third strike allowed Fran Riordan, who had reached on a Diaz error, to score. Ambassador starter John Dillinger actually struck out twelve in six innings, but allowed five runs, only one of them earned, on six hits.

The Ambassadors responded immediately, scoring three in the sixth, with Vic Davilla delivering with a two out, two run, bases loaded single. The Ambassadors added another in the seventh to tie the game, with Brian Macchi singling home Marlon Roche, who had doubled to begin the inning. Then in the eighth, the Ambassadors took the lead. Ender Gonzalez doubled with two outs and then Davilla came through again with an RBI single.

John Boker came in to pitch the ninth and struck out Michael Tejada to start it off. But then Sepulveda walked, followed by a Charles double. Eddie Muth then singled, driving home Sepulveda to tie the game, but Charles was thrown out at the plate by Cedrick Harris. It did not matter, as Riordan then singled, driving home Muth, and Jose Castellanos capped it off with a two run home run to center field to give the Spirit the 9-6 lead.

Joe Ricciardi pitched the eighth and ninth innings to get the win for the Spirit, who improved to 18-15 with the victory. The Ambassadors lost their fifth game in a row and their tenth in their last twelve. They are now 12-19. Boker got his second loss. Startari was 3-4 with three doubles and run scored for the Spirit; Davilla was 3-5 with 3 RBI for the Ambassadors, who committed four errors for the second straight game. The two teams wrap up this series tomorrow afternoon at 5:05, it's an Ice Cream Sundae, so the first 300 kids attending the game get a free Ice Cream Sundae, courtesy of Ice Cream World.
