Black Bears Fall in Overtime

The New Jersey Titans and Maryland Black Bears locked horns for the second time in as many days. In a back and forth game that saw sixty minutes of regulation time see no goals, overtime was required. It was there that Spencer Stanley for the Titans scored on the power play to give New Jersey a 1-0 win and a series sweep over Maryland.

The first period saw New Jersey go on the power play less than a minute in on a Connor Pooley tripping call, but the Black Bears weathered the storm and killed off the penalty. The Black Bears were awarded a power play later that period but could not convert either.

The second period saw the goaltenders for each club step up. Matt Ladd made key stops for the Titans, including robbing Black Bears' defenseman Luc Salem with the glove on a cross ice pass midway through the period. Tyler Mathews responded with some big saves of his own, including denying two Titans skaters on breakaway chances. The Titans appeared to open the scoring in the middle of the period, after Bryce Witman tipped a Spencer Stanley shot past Mathews, but the goal was waved off due to the net being off.

The third period saw a big chance for the Black Bears to pull ahead late in the game. With 3:55 to go, Mac Wiseman of the Titans took down Carter Wade of the Black Bears which drew a power play for Maryland. Despite good zone time, the Black Bears could not capitalize and the game went to overtime. Maryland finished regulation 0-3 on the power play.

It was in overtime where Jack Rudin of Maryland took down New Jersey's Ryan Naumovski on a break away and was called for a tripping penalty. It was on this power play after some movement in the offensive zone, the Titans finally got the series' first power play goal. Naumovski passed the puck to the point to Spencer Stanley, who let a slap shot go top blocker side on Mathews to win the game for New Jersey. Matt Ladd made 25 saves in the shutout win while Tyler Mathews turned aside 23 of 24 shots.

Despite the loss, Maryland picks up its first point in franchise history. Maryland now sits in fifth place in the East Division while the two wins will put New Jersey in a tie for first with the Johnstown Tomahawks.

The Black Bears now turn their attention to the NAHL Showcase in Blaine, MN. The first game will be Wednesday September 19th as the Black Bears look for win number one against the Springfield Jr Blues with puck drop at 7:30 CT. Maryland returns home October 12th for a match up against the Johnstown Tomahawks.
