Black Bears Complete 2018 Season

Granville, W. Va. - After an exciting summer of baseball at Monongalia County Ballpark, the West Virginia Black Bears have completed 2018 season.

The Black Bears lost in extras to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 4-1, as the visitors stole the series win before heading into the postseason.

In the early going, neither team could muster a run across home plate. A pitcher's duel between P Alex Manasa and Mahoning Valley starter Raymond Burgos moved the game quickly into the fifth inning with the score knotted at 0-0.

Then in the top of the fifth, the Scrappers finally got on the board. An RBI double gave the away team a one-run lead halfway through Monday afternoon's matchup.

Manasa exited the game after five innings, allowing just one run on four hits to go with one strikeout and one walk. P Will Gardner followed up with a shutout frame in the sixth, picking up two strikeouts without surrendering a hit.

P Allen Montgomery continued an excellent afternoon for the West Virginia bullpen by holding off Mahoning Valley in the seventh inning. He was relieved by P Nick Mears, who got his team through the top of the eighth inning with the score still 1-0 in the Scrappers' favor.

The Black Bears scraped together a run in the bottom of the eighth to tie up the game. 2B Kyle Watson's groundout with the bases loaded brought a runner around to score and give the home team some life headed into the ninth inning.

Mears had another scoreless frame in the top of the ninth, but the offense couldn't produce a walk-off in regulation as the game went to extra innings.

Mahoning Valley wasted no time in taking the lead in the top of the tenth, putting up three runs to take a 4-1 lead. West Virginia was unable to respond, suffering a loss to finish off the 2018 regular season.

The Black Bears finished the season with a record of 32-44, winning seven of the team's last ten games.
